Public comment is invited on the Draft Warrnambool Floodplain Management Plan (2018-2023).
The Warrnambool region has a long history of flooding across three main sources – rivers, stormwater systems and storm tides. The historical reference point for flooding in the region is the March 1946 flood that caused extensive damage across the region. This and numerous other flood events have yielded a significant body of knowledge that has been further built upon through specific flood investigations.
The Warrnambool Floodplain Management Plan (2018‐2023) follows on from extensive flood investigations and works across the municipality.
The plan has been developed in the context of the:
• Victorian Floodplain Management Strategy (2016) and
• Draft Regional Floodplain Management Strategy (2017)
Key objectives of the plan are to:
• Consolidate emerging flood issues into one document through stakeholder engagement and community consultation
• A greater understanding of the major challenges relating to flood risk
• Provide clear direction for investment and floodplain management actions
Consultation is a central part of the Warrnambool Floodplain Management Plan and highlighted the importance of our rivers and waterway to our community.
Gathering community insight on the proposed Draft Warrnambool Floodplain Management Plan is critical as the final document will shape the management of our floodplains for the foreseeable future.
